Former Frankston mayor Christine Richards is running for the Senate at the May 21 election. Ms Richards was a last-minute candidate and has joined Susan Benedyka, a founding member of Voices of Indi, which unseated Liberal Sophie Mirabella at the 2013 election and was the catalyst for the teal independents movement that looks set to revolutionise Australian politics.
Ms Richards said she won’t get enough votes to win but hopes to increase the chances of Ms Benedyka being elected “in a system that’s biased against independent voices”. Her full reasons are in an article called Losing to Win here.
The ex-mayor has had careers in law, media and government, including as a law reform commissioner; with the ABC and New Internationalist magazine; and on Frankston Council from 2008-12. She was mayor in 2009.
Ms Richards said she was running with Ms Benedyka because “our personal philosophies and public policies align”. “We support climate change action; help for people affected by drought and natural disasters; increased funding for the CSIRO; renewable energy; a federal ICAC; improving Centrelink payments; better planning; and making our politics less divisive.”
The two women are under Group T on the Senate ballot. Victorian voters will elect six senators next Saturday.
