Ethan Ashton’s life has transformed dramatically over the past few years.
Just three years ago, Ethan was a teenager working at a fast-food outlet, and then he held down two jobs: one as a barista by day, the other as a bartender in the evenings. Today, the Frankston 20-year-old is striding down the runways of London and Milan, representing top fashion brands and living out a dream that he never could have predicted.
For Ethan, the journey into fashion was not something he had ever really thought about. He has done some acting and enjoyed it, but it was not on his radar as career. In 2022, feeling a bit low and in need of a new focus, he went to a car dealership in Frankston with his mum. A chance encounter with a talent scout led him to a modelling agency in Melbourne.
“I was told I had a ‘high-fashion’ look; I didn’t even know what that was,” he said. “I thought no harm in trying at least; maybe make a few more dollars every now and then.” It was only after his second or third visit to the agency’s office that he was introduced to a Milan-based scout. From there, the road to the international catwalk opened up, launching him into an entirely new world.
Getting to this point hasn’t been an easy path though. “In high school, there was a bit of bullying and some mental health issues. It was just a bit of a toxic environment.” Ethan now aims to channel his experiences into a desire to inspire others. As he garners more visibility, he’s passionate about becoming an “advocate and role model” for young people facing similar struggles. His message is clear: “The way things look for a certain period of time is not how they’re always going to look. Be in the moment with yourself, believe in yourself – nothing’s for ever.”
Stepping into the world of modelling was quite surreal. Ethan had never even been to Europe, let alone experienced the luxuries of penthouse hotel rooms and exclusive fashion brands. “I was like: ‘This is a jump up from Frankston’.”
Ethan has modelled in various countries, including Türkiye, and at the London and Milan fashion weeks. He finds the international experience especially rewarding, noting how supportive people in Europe have been. “In Europe, everyone really supports success; they want you to do well.” Although he appreciates Australia’s laid-back vibe, Ethan says he’s found a special kinship in Europe’s high-energy fashion circles.
The travel, the fast-paced nature of the industry and the uncertainty are all things Ethan has embraced. “You learn a lot about yourself and who you want to be as a person.”
He credits his family and close friends with keeping him grounded amid the whirlwind of his new career. “My mum was a bit wary at first and my dad was sad to see me go, but they’re really supportive and proud of what I’ve achieved.”
For young people who are struggling, Ethan’s advice is simple: work hard, but don’t be afraid to take a leap. “If there’s something you love and want to do, just do it. It’s important to take risks, because if nothing changes, nothing changes. I just decided to make the leap to go to Milan and it paid off. Sometimes it doesn’t, but that shouldn’t discourage you from taking a chance.”
Ethan’s story proves that sometimes the most unexpected paths can lead to the most extraordinary places. And as he strides forward, this level-headed young man is determined to make a difference, one runway at a time.
