Join the Blitz and help document our biodiversity
by Mornington Peninsula Magazine

Are you a nature noticer or a feather finder? A rock pool rambler or a sea snorkeller? Curious about caterpillars or bemused by beetles? Perhaps you’re a budding botanist or expert bird nerder? Whether you’re new to nature or know your brown beaks from your blue-bills, Mornington Peninsula Shire is inviting you to join the BioBlitz to help document the Peninsula’s amazing biodiversity.

The Shire is celebrating Biodiversity Month next month by partnering with neighbouring councils to take part in this year’s Biodiversity Blitz from September 1-30. Download the iNaturalist app and sign up to create your profile, then head outdoors during September to snap photos of Peninsula nature finds and upload them to the app.

“Joining the BioBlitz is a great way to learn about local plants and animals and get involved in local conservation and citizen science,” the Shire said in a statement this morning. “If you’re getting ready to take part in the BioBlitz this September, then you’ll need to learn how to use iNaturalist. Join the iNaturalist for Beginners online webinar hosted by Yarra Ranges Council next Wednesday, August 31, at 7pm. You can register here and learn about how to access iNaturalist, join the BioBlitz, take high-quality photos, add your contributions to iNaturalist, and help others identify their observations.”

Meanwhile, if you want to explore the Peninsula’s biodiversity you can join the Shire’s bushland management team for guided wildflower walks through Peninsula bushland reserves. You’ll be guided by plant experts who will be on hand to help you identify plants and answer your wildlife-related questions. Places are limited, so you’re advised to register.

Friday, September 2, Moorooduc Quarry Flora and Fauna Reserve, 10am; register here

“As reigning BioBlitz champions from 2021, we are in it to win it again,” said Mayor Anthony Marsh. “We encourage everyone to get outside and join us in this community science event, and record your nature finds from across the Peninsula. By taking part you’ll be contributing to community science and showcasing the amazing biodiversity of the Mornington Peninsula. You might even help us win the council area with most recorded species.”
