Mornington Peninsula Shire is raising the rainbow flag on Wednesday, May 17, in recognition of the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia, and has invited the community to join it.
Flag-raising ceremonies will be held at the shire offices in Hastings, Mornington and Rosebud from 10am, with morning tea to follow, and the public is welcome to attend. Cr Lisa Dixon will be at the Hastings ceremony, Cr Despi O’Connor at Mornington and Crs Sarah Race and Simon Brooks at Rosebud.
“IDAHOBIT seeks to bring us into a world free from discrimination,” the shire said in a statement this morning. “Did you know that 35 per cent of LGBTIQA+ Australians have experienced verbal abuse in the past 12 months? We stand in solidarity with our lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, queer/questioning and asexual residents, community friends, family, allies and colleagues.”
